Lake Pontchartrain (Images of America)

Fond in the memories of many New Orleanians, Pontchartrain Beach Amusement Park attracted swimmers and pleasure seekers of all ages who enjoyed the pool, the man-made beach, the rides, concessions, Penny Arcade, Laff in the Dark, and Bali Hai restaurant. Entertainment included stage shows, the annual Miss New Orleans Pageant, and a 1956 Elvis Presley performance. Originally opened across Bayou St. John from Spanish Fort in 1928, the amusement park moved to its final location on Elysian Fields Avenue in 1940 when this photograph was taken.
