1982 - Friends of City Park

After Friends of City Park was established its first major project was the 1982 enclosure and restoration of the Rose Garden complete with eighty-one year old Alferez' new Grass Gates (above) at the original main entrance to the garden. In 1984 Friends staged A Tribute to the Christmas Tree which evolved into the beautifully magical Celebration In The Oaks which attracts 40,000 visitors annually. Storyland was restored by Friends in 1986 as was the Carousel in 1988 when the Amusement Park gates (below) were constructed. In 1989 their efforts resulted in the restoration of the Peristyle. After Katrina their volunteers took shovel and rake in hand to clean up the park. The group which first sought to make the park a nicer place, the City Park Improvement Association, celebrated its 100th anniversary in 1991. (DCM)
