In what is now Barreca’s Restaurant at 3100 Metairie Road was Ovella’s when this advertisement ran in 1976. It was a casual neighborhood restaurant which served simple traditional New Orleans food such as po-boys and seafood. It was owned and operated by Bobbie & Jerome Sauer. Just after going under the Causeway overpass we come upon Genarro’s Restaurant and Bar at 3206 Metairie Road. In 1976 proprietor William J. Dwyer (who was a former Jefferson Parish Councilman and Louisiana State Representative) proclaimed it to be the “Oldest bar in Metairie operated by the same family”. Members of the Dwyer family are shown here in 1945. During the 1950s an orchestra played for dancers on Friday and Saturday evenings. Dwyer claimed that Metairie’s carnival Krewe of Zeus was organized at his bar and that it was visited by many famous personalities. A one block street, Gennaro Place, runs along the side of the bar/restaurant. (Courtesy of the Jefferson Parish Yearly Review.)
