Airline Bowl & The Dump

Metairie/TheDump.jpg

When the photograph above was taken in 1950 the incinerator on David Drive at 7201 Airline was considered a modern means of handling municipal garbage. It could handle 100 tons per day and served the entire east bank of Jefferson Parish. Most residents simply called it “the Dump”.  It has been demolished. The Airline Bowling Center at 7401 Airline (four blocks west of David Drive) was new in 1963 when the advertisement below was placed. It was the first in the south to offer “Automatic Sparemasters”. The location is now a Lions Club Bingo Hall. Down the road at 7875 Airline was another McKenzie’s Pastry Shoppe. (Courtesy of the Jefferson Parish Yearly Review.)
