Adjacent to the 17th Street Canal the Daniel Eastman built an imposing home (seen here in a 1906 photograph) on his dairy farm. Mr. and Mrs. Eastman as well their neighbors Ernest Riviere and Louis E. Breaux were actively involved in the community having served as officers of the Eighth Ward Democratic Club. The Eastman’s opened their property to the public for use as a picnic ground. Fischer's Ragtime Band can be seen here on the Eastman's Farm in 1915; left to right -- Fred J. Williams (drums), George Barth (cornet), George 'Happy' Schilling (trombone), Harry Shannon (cornet), Tony Barba (bass), John Fischer (Phillips) (clarinet). The Metairie Small Animal Hospital has occupied a portion of this property since 1952. (Courtesy of the Louisiana Digital Library.)
