The Bucktown Fishing Fleet

Metairie/BucktownFishingFleet.jpg

Here is a view of the Bucktown fishing fleet which was destroyed by Hurricane Katrina. The origin of its name is uncertain; some say it was named for the numerous bucks killed there, some recalled Captain Buck Wooley, an early settler who is said to have run a popular saloon and rented fishing boats during the 1840s, others relate the name to “young bucks” who frequented the area after Storyville was shut down in New Orleans.  (Courtesy of the Louisiana State University.
