Dark areas on this 1845 map indicate land inundated in a September of 1723 hurricane which destroyed much of the then tiny city New Orleans. It has been estimated that over 150 hurricanes and tropical storms have struck or come very near the Louisiana coast since recorded history. (Courtesy of the Louisiana Digital Library.)
